The arrival of Atbara’s train to the sit-in protest in Khartoum was an epic moment.
It was not just the arrival of the train- it’s the symbolism of the train and Atbara in itself. It was in Atbara where the first protests against Bashir erupted. Atbara’s protesters took the streets and faced death in the absence of any media coverage.
The protests were large and were among the first protests to call for the fall of the regime. One of the first martyrs of this revolution, Engineer Tarig Ahmed was killed in Atbara (pictured below)
Following these protests, the revolution continued and Bashir was ousted.
In essence, what was started in Atbara, changed the course of history in Sudan.
Atbara is also home to the National Railway Headquarters.
